SILCHAR: A blast at a mosque in remote Kachurthal in Assam’s Hailakandi district along the Assam-Mizoram border early on Friday had the police on toes. No casualty was reported as no one was around when the explosion occurred around 2.15am, but the mosque was damaged.
A long-standing border dispute between the two states is believed to have triggered the explosion. Hailakandi SP Mohneesh Mishra said suspected miscreants from Mizoram had set off the blast. A case has been registered at the Ramnathpur police station and an investigation is on.
Earlier, Mizo miscreants had blown up an Assam government-run lower primary school and a watchtower of the Assam forest department in Kachurthal.
Villagers living in the area said Mizo miscreants collect “taxes” from the villagers living on the Assam side of the border.
