Agreement signed to supply natural gas to 5 Assam districts – Times of India


GUWAHATI: Assam Gas Company Ltd, Oil India Limited and GAIL Gas Ltd on Thursday signed a joint venture agreement for laying, building and operating the City Gas Distribution Networks for supply of piped natural gas to the domestic, commercial and industrial customers and compressed natural gas (CNG) to vehicles in Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts in the first phase.
According to the state government, approximately 4.16 lakh households across these five districts will be connected with piped natural gas (PNG). These districts will also have 72 CNG stations. An estimated amount of Rs 1,700 crore will be spent for the purpose in the coming years.
Around 95,000 households will be connected with PNG while 21 CNG stations will be set up in Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts at an estimated cost of approximately Rs 500 crore. Apart from this, another 3,21,000 households will be connected with PNG and 51 CNG stations will be set up in Kamrup and Kamrup (Metro) districts in the coming years at an estimated cost of approximately Rs 1,200 crore.
A government spokesman said the state government has initiated the preliminary work on the project and the detailed feasibility study has been completed. “Domestic and commercial piped gas connections in Guwahati city will be available within the next two years on the city being connected with the National Gas Grid. In addition, CNG stations will also be set up during this period to meet the requirements of clean fuel for the transport sector.”
A state government spokesman said that chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has taken a series of welfare initiatives for raising the standard of living for the people of the state and this is one of them.
The Centre has allowed the extension of the National Gas Grid Pipeline (Urja Ganga Project), which was originally planned for extension from Jagadishpur in Western Uttar Pradesh to Haldia in West Bengal, through an intermediate spur line from Barauni in Bihar to Guwahati. The gas pipeline construction work is being carried out by GAIL India Limited.
The Barauni to Guwahati section of the Nation Gas Grid is likely to be completed by December, 2020. The eight NE states will be connected by the Indradhanush Gas Grid Ltd. to the National Gas Grid.
Managing director of Assam Gas Company Ltd, Aditya Kumar Sharma, executive director (business development) of Oil India Limited, SK Singh and CEO of GAIL Gas Ltd, AK Jana signed the joint venture agreement in the presence of industries and commerce minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, media adviser to chief minister, Hrishikesh Goswami, Sadiya MLA and chairman of Assam Gas Company Ltd, Bolin Chetia and other senior officials state government.
